For food allergic individuals ingesting the foods they are allergic to could result in the development of severe swelling, hives, itching, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It may also cause a more life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis. These symptoms can occur quickly within minutes and progress rapidly. Avoiding these foods is often a difficult and frustrating task. It is also very stressful for patients and those caring for the patients. The only way to avoid such symptoms is avoiding the offending foods. These individuals constantly have to look up or ask what ingredients are in the food item they want to eat and verify no cross contamination occurred during the preparation of the food. Some children are often bullied at school as well leading to depression and anxiety.
There are several potential emerging treatments for food allergies that have yielded much success in protecting patients against these potentially life-threatening allergies. One of the more common treatments is called oral immunotherapy. Oral Immunotherapy consists of the individual ingesting the food he or she is allergic to in small incremental amounts daily. It is something that is very carefully monitored by a skilled physician, an allergist, who is trained in the delivery of this kind of treatment.
Most individuals are able to eat the food he or she is allergic to in just 10 months after starting treatment. Frequently, an individual must stay on oral immunotherapy to continue to tolerate eating the food he or she is allergic to, however 25% of individuals can discontinue oral immunotherapy and continue eating the food with no symptoms. Again, this treatment is done very cautiously and only under the direction of a qualified allergist. This is not something to be tried at home.
