Dr. Douglas and Michele Jones had the opportunity to spend a week in Beijing, China training community doctors and parents on many different aspects of asthma. There are 4 main factors that account for asthma exacerbations in Beijing; pollution, smoking, dust mites and mold. Although some headway was made, there is still a lot of training and education to be done.
Dr. Jones had the opportunity to meet Dr. Chen; she is the #1 doctor for asthma care in Beijing. Many patients and their families travel hundreds of miles just to see her.
In china, allergy shots are available to patients who are allergic to Dust Mites only. The hospital does not have the resources for other pollens. The shot clinic is run by the nursing staff and open only on Saturdays from 1-4pm. China has 4 levels of hospitals: City, State, District and National. The Capital Institute is on a national level in Beijing and provides care to more than 13 million people in the city.
While there, Dr. Jones also trained community doctors about asthma care and management. Community doctors are the first that most residents in urban and rural areas of Beijing see for care. They have 3-4 years of training in special colleges and have the bottom rank in the medical profession.
